Wisdom Tooth Removal

The smartest way to prevent overcrowding

Wisdom tooth removal involves surgically extracting your wisdom teeth, which are the four back molars you have in each corner of your mouth. Most people have their wisdom teeth grow in when they are between 17-25 years old and, in most cases, dentists believe it’s better for your overall dental health to have them removed. At Georgian Mall Family Dental, our dental surgeons are very experienced at wisdom tooth removal and can make the entire removal and recovery as stress- and pain-free as possible.

When should my wisdom teeth be removed?

When there’s no room for them to grow
Sometimes, your jaw simply does not have any space available for the wisdom teeth to grow in. Wisdom teeth are actually a part of the human DNA that goes back centuries, when our ancestors needed a stronger jaw and teeth to rip and chew food. Now that this is no longer necessary, our jaws have shrunk in size but the wisdom teeth often still remain.

When the wisdom teeth become impacted
Due to the lack of space available at the back of your mouth, the wisdom teeth often don’t develop normally and become impacted. Your wisdom teeth can even get trapped in your gums or jawbone which can result in swelling, infection and extreme pain. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, we have no choice but to take your wisdom teeth out.

When you develop gum disease or cavities
Because wisdom teeth are so difficult to access with a toothbrush and floss, these teeth are especially prone to developing certain gum diseases and cavities. During your regular checkup, your dentist and hygienist team will pay special attention to your wisdom teeth to ensure the area is healthy. If we detect a problem and one that isn’t likely to go away, we will advise you on having your wisdom teeth removed to avoid potentially bigger complications in the future.

When they grow in at an abnormal angle
Once again, because wisdom teeth have so little room to grow in the jaw, they will often grow in at an unusual angle and cause a lot of pain. For example, your new teeth may be applying uncomfortable pressure against your existing teeth. Sometimes your wisdom teeth can also cause you to accidentally bite your cheek. In either case, the best solution is to have them taken out.

Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?

Wisdom tooth removal is considered a major surgery, which requires general or local anesthesia to make the removal procedure more comfortable. It’s common for patients to experience some form of pain or discomfort following surgery. An over-the-counter pain reliever can help you manage the pain, or you can ask your dental surgeon for stronger prescription medicine. It usually takes about 3 to 4 days to fully recover from wisdom teeth removal, although it can take as long as a week.
