A porcelain veneer is an extremely thin shell of porcelain that bonds to the front of a tooth (enamel). We believe it’s extremely important to use veneers that blend in naturally and simply complement the shape, colour and symmetry of the teeth and smile. Porcelain is the ideal material because it can be crafted to provide the look of natural enamel. We use three types of porcelain systems depending on the patient profile: Empress, Emax and Feldspathic Porcelain. Your dentist will explain the benefits of each system and help you decide which is best suited for you.
Porcelain veneers are ideal for people who want to improve their smile quickly, through a gentle and minimally invasive procedure. Some of the main reasons people opt to have porcelain veneers is to correct worn teeth, uneven teeth, discoloured teeth, crooked teeth, chipped/broken teeth or a desire to simply improve upon their existing smile.
Porcelain veneers aren’t just used for elective cosmetic dentistry. They’re also a great solution to replace old mercury fillings, or fix a smile alignment when certain teeth are either too small or too large. Whatever the reason for getting porcelain veneers, every patient will agree that getting their teeth fixed provides a major smile improvement and a huge boost of confidence.
Our three-step process for applying porcelain veneers is rooted in the famous phrase “begin with the end in mind.” Having transformed countless smiles through the use of porcelain veneers, our hands-on expertise and iron-clad process ensure every porcelain veneer treatment is performed smoothly every time.
The first step is all about you asking questions and getting honest answers about the scope of work, expectations and what’s involved in the treatment. We’ll also take digital images of your teeth and smile that we can analyze right away while discussing any reservations, goals and objectives. For your comfort, these images are shared with you privately on a high-definition LCD display. Rest assured, our dentists and clinic team are experienced in understanding what each patient is looking for through the procedure and providing what you want. Whether it’s a custom treatment plan for just a couple porcelain veneers or a comprehensive full-mouth rehabilitation, you will receive a personalized treatment plan that will achieve your goals.
Once we have established the cosmetic plan for your smile, we make impressions of your teeth and send these models plus detailed instructions to one of our trusted ceramists. We’ll select the ideal ceramist for your specific plan, and communicate extensively with this dental industry professional to ensure they understand the specifics unique to your treatment. The ceramist will carefully craft your models and then test their handiwork on a chewing simulator to mimic how the porcelain veneers will behave. This “wax-up” blueprint will allow us to envision how the restorations will function in your mouth. Our desire is to not only ensure your smile looks incredible, but that your teeth are functionally long-lasting and work right. This wax-up serves two additional purposes: it allows you and the doctor to preview the end result before we actually start working in your mouth, and creates a template from which we will design your temporary veneers. These “temporaries” will look beautiful and allow you to “test drive” your new smile at your preparation appointment (usually your second appointment). At this appointment, we prepare your teeth as needed and take models on which the actual porcelain veneers are made. We then place your temporaries and send your case to our master ceramist to create your custom porcelain veneers.
A couple of weeks after your preparation appointment, we’ll see you again to remove your temporaries and let you “try on” your new porcelain veneers to make sure you’re satisfied with the ceramist’s work. Then we’ll bond your porcelain veneers to your teeth, make any minor necessary adjustments if required and offer you all the time you need in front of a mirror to admire your new-look teeth. Finally, if you have teeth-grinding issues, we’ll take an impression of your new teeth to make a protective guard for nighttime wear.
Porcelain veneers should look, feel and behave like natural teeth. This means you can brush, floss and eat all of the foods you love. Another benefit of porcelain veneers is that they will not stain nearly as quickly and easily as natural teeth. When you visit us next for a regular check-up and cleaning, your hygienist will use a special polishing agent to ensure your veneers remain as shiny and new as the day they were bonded in place.
